Isothiazolinone

Description

5/5 - (3 votes)

Isothiazolin (sometimes isothiazolone) is a heterocyclic chemical compound with the chemical formula C3H3NOS, which, compared to many heterocycles, is relatively simple and was discovered relatively recently. Reports on this substance were first published in the 1960s. The compound itself has no practical use, but its derivatives are widely used as fungicides and disinfectants. Isothiazolin is usually light green in color, and its derivatives are widely used in biological fields as antimicrobial preservatives or antibacterial agents. This substance easily dissolves in water and has very low toxicity. Isothiazolins are usually prepared on an industrial scale by closing a ring of sulfanil derivatives. They are themselves produced from acrylic acid, which is formed through mercapto propionic acid. This reaction is called ring-closure. During this reaction, the intermediate ring of isothiazolin is oxidized and produces valuable substances.

Article 1: Gel Analysis of Isothiazolin and Other Preservatives
Isothiazolin is a heterocyclic chemical compound related to isothiazole. Isothiazolin is an antimicrobial preservative often used to control fungi, bacteria, and algae. Since water-based solutions are a breeding ground for bacteria, isothiazolin can easily be used in such solutions. Methy chloro-isothiazolinone (MCI) along with methylisothiazolinone (MI) is present in cosmetic products. MCI/MI is a sensitizer and irritant. Raw materials for preparing isothiazolins and starting materials include methyl chloride and acrylates. Some compounds in the isothiazolin family include:
– Methyl isothiazolinone (MI)
– Methyl chloro isothiazolinone (MCI)
– Benzisothiazolinone (BIT)
– Octyl isothiazolinone (OIT)

Article 2: Safety Data Sheet
According to the safety guidelines for this product, the use of isothiazolin products by manufacturers who use it as a soothing agent and a substance to remove wrinkles is not harmful. However, skin allergies have been reported in the case of isothiazolins. According to reports from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), methyl chloroisothiazolinone is among the sensitizing chemicals and can cause burns and irritation on the skin and its membranes at high concentrations. In some cases, this substance can also cause severe skin sensitivity upon contact with the skin, causing skin damage and burns on the outer surface of the skin in contact. The degree of damage and sensitivity depends on the concentration of the solution. Therefore, exercise extra caution when using products containing isothiazolins. These preservatives have a low molecular weight and can penetrate the skin. Other risks of using isothiazolin include negative and undesirable effects such as poisoning and contaminating water when poured into it.

Market and Application of Isothiazolin

Isothiazolins are antimicrobial agents used to control bacteria, fungi, and algae in cooling water systems, fuel storage tanks, water treatment systems, paper mills, and oil extraction systems, as well as preserving wood and anti-pollution materials. Today, there are various products on the market that use isothiazolin and its derivatives in their production, such as sunscreens, hand sanitizers, shampoos, cosmetics, lotions, etc. One of the most important goals of using isothiazolin in such products is to inhibit microbial activity, which could potentially spoil the product before its expiration date. Some of these microbial contaminations can cause serious health problems for consumers, and designing products that inhibit microbial activity is one of the best ways to protect consumer safety and health. The purchase of isothiazolin is often made by factories producing personal care products such as shampoos and other hair care products, as well as special formulations, often using the well-known combination of MIT and CMIT (known as Kathon CG) or MIT and BIT. Considering that this product has a very good market both domestically and in terms of exports, JAM Manufacturers has sought to succeed in producing this very valuable product domestically by maintaining quality and reasonable prices in the field of domestic production. Some uses of isothiazolin include:

– As a preservative in metalworking and adhesive industries
– Isozil (R) MW-14 is a high-performance biocide for preserving metal fluids, hydraulic fluids, polymer emulsions, and paints.
– Recommended uses: Concentrated preservative.
– As an industrial water treatment chemical
– Isozil (R) RW is a high-efficiency industrial biocide (antibacterial) for use in recirculating water chillers, mold and fungus control, paper mills, and air purification systems.
– Recommended uses: Industrial water treatment.
– Cosmetics and personal care industries
– Due to the chemical properties of isothiazolin, it is used as a preservative in cosmetics and personal care product industries.
– As a medical device disinfectant, an isothiazolin derivative was tested as an antimicrobial to inhibit PCAF activity. In this experiment, chloroisothiazolinones showed the strongest PCAF inhibitory properties. Therefore, this substance is also used to disinfect medical devices.
